The Advisory Board Picnic was warm, but wunderbar

Gini & birthday girl Margaret                    Traude, Dave & Susanne

Thanks to Hank & Gini Schreimann's hospitality at their Carlyle Lake Club House, the annual German American Heritage Society (GAHS) Advisory Board Picnic was well-attended on Sunday, August 8th by a festive group of both the GAHS Board and Advisory Board members. There was plenty of exceptionally good food provided by members, a variety of relief bringing cold beverages and more than enough summer heat to share at this year's event.

Advisory Board members, Balladeer Jim Stemmler and Musikmeister Joe Hoffmann on the accordion, led the friendly group in a few favorite German folk tunes. Other Advisory Board members attending were, Gary & Traude, as well as Dr. Steven Rowan.

The picnic is an annual "thank you" event for the extra time and special talents that our Advisory Board members contribute in support of the Society.

GAHS hosts Sommerfest tour with four other area German-American groups

St. Louis – On Saturday, July 17 the German American Heritage Society of Saint Louis hosted a Sommerfest day tour of St. Louis ’ historic Bellefontaine and Calvary cemeteries with members of four other area German-American organizations. Sommerfest Tour Guide, Linda Koenig, provided an in-depth narration of little known, but relevant facts about some of St. Louis ’ leading families buried in each cemetery. This year’s Sommerfest was organized and led by GAHS Board Member, Bud McCain.

For lunch, the group enjoyed a delicious, authentic German meal of salad, veal schnitzel, potato pancakes, red cabbage, breads, and strudel with iced tea and coffee at the St. Louis Gast Haus. Special thanks goes to Ann Sueme, Maritza Stock, their family and staff who opened the restaurant for our special German lunch.

After lunch, the group toured several historical St. Louis German landmarks and selected statuary in Tower Grove Park .

The not for profit organization is celebrating its 20th anniversary providing both annual and periodic grants to selected area German cultural programs and organizations, as well as university student study abroad programs.
