July 14 was a sunny Saturday for 20 GAHS members who traveled by an elegant travel coach to visit the historic Churchill Museum and the old English Church on the campus of Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. After one of Judd Presley's famous Bloody Marys or Mimosas, the motor coach departed the A. G. Edwards parking lot at 8:00am for a carefree ride to Fulton. As a Westminster College alumni, Judd also provided block-by-block-tours of both Westminster and William Woods Colleges.

 

The Churchill Memorial was built from 1964 to 1969 to commemorate Winston Churchill's 1946 visit to Fulton where he delivered his now famous "Iron Curtain" speech.

 

One year after the November 9, 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, President Ronald Reagan in 1990, dedicated "Breakthrough", an 11-foot-high by 32-foot-long structure sculpted from 8 sections of the Berlin Wall by artist Edwina Sandys, granddaughter of Winston Churchill, as the centerpiece of the Cold War Memorial on the Westminster campus. The sculpture stands in an adjacent plaza to the church.

 

After an unguided tour of both the Churchill Memorial and the restored 12th century Church of St. Mary the Virgin (which was moved stone by stone from London to Fulton for the Memorial), the group headed down the highway to Rocheport, Missouri. In the spirit of Bastille Day, they stopped for a wonderful luncheon at the Rocheport, Missouri winery and restaurant, Les Bourgeois, which is situated on a beautiful bluff overlooking the Missouri river. After a brief stop at the winery gift shop for liquid souvenirs, it was on the road again to arrive home just before dinner.
