St. Louis – On Saturday, July 17 the German American
Heritage Society of Saint Louis hosted a Sommerfest day tour of St.
Louis ’ historic Bellefontaine and Calvary
cemeteries with members of four other area German-American organizations.
Sommerfest Tour Guide, Linda Koenig, provided an in-depth narration of little
known, but relevant facts about some of St. Louis ’
leading families buried in each cemetery. This year’s Sommerfest was organized
and led by GAHS Board Member, Bud McCain.
For lunch, the group enjoyed a delicious, authentic German
meal of salad, veal schnitzel, potato pancakes, red cabbage,
breads, and strudel with iced tea and coffee at the St. Louis Gast Haus. Special thanks goes to Ann Sueme, Maritza Stock, their
family and staff who opened the restaurant for our special German lunch.
After lunch, the group toured several historical St. Louis
German landmarks and selected statuary in Tower Grove Park.
The not for profit organization is celebrating its 20th
anniversary providing both annual and periodic grants to selected area German
cultural programs and organizations, as well as university student study abroad
programs.
